The Finale Answer: LOST

THIS was a good finale. Why? Because although it is all the rage to end the season of a show at a devastating cliffhanger (Prison Break), Lost did not really do that, at least not to the extent it did last year. In fact, it answered more questions than it posed. That's good because cliffhangers are not really necessary because if you are watching a season finale, you are proably already pretty familiar with the show.

Quick summary: Desmond returns in a boat. Micheal shanghies his friends and they are taken prisoner by the others. In exchange he gets his son back and gets to leave the island. Eko is tricked by Locke and Desmond and is locked out of the hatch as the timer descends to less than zero. As all hell breaks loose, Desmond explodes the hatch, possibly killing himself, Locke, and Eko. Claire and Charlie kiss, thus setting up their doom in season 3 (if you have sex on island, one of the people engaged in said act must die). And someone on the outside discovers the location of the island.

I liked it.

  1. I'll read and post about this once I actually watch it. May not be for a few days.

In the meantime, I put up the X3 review. The discussions can continue on the Ratnerization of the X-Men!

  2. I really enjoyed the part where Skipper was beating Gilligan with the hat. THAT WAS HILARIOUS.

  3. I thought this episode was kind of a mess. I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would, even though they did deliver on the promise of explaining why Oceanic 815 crashed. If you haven't watched this episode yet, and are planning to, be warned that there are spoilers from here on out.

First of all, I hope they didn't kill Locke, Eko or Desmond... though Desmond is likely to be doomed since it would follow the show's predisposition towards developing a character and then killing them (i.e. Shannon, Ana-Lucia, Libby). I thought certain scenes could have used more punch... the reveal of Michael as a traitor to the search party was pretty underwhelming, pretty much resulting in everyone giving him an icy stare and then continuing the mission anyway.

I liked the backstory with Desmond but it seemed to happen too late, especially if he dies in the hatch (what exactly happened that caused the skies to light up? And why the hell didn't he tell Penny he wrote her all those letters when he saw her at the stadium??)... with the snail's pace at which most of Season 2 unfolded, the finale seemed to be like a dam bursting, throwing several resolutions and new characters and changes into the mix all in one show. Then, with the episode being double the normal length, it just felt like too much.

Also, the final scene with Charlie and Claire seemed forced... all of the sudden she likes him after avoiding him for most of the season? I would have preferred them to end on the patrol boat way out in the middle of snowy nowhere, where they pick up the electromagnetic discharge from the hatch and make the call to Penny. Just my 2 cents...

  4. I concur with your assessment of the Claire/Charlie situation. I think now that he has thrown away all the heroin she knows she can trust him.

Anyway, the fact she has a baby tells you Claire is a "good-time girl." And who else is she going to have a 'good time' with?

  5. I have no fucking clue what you guys are talking about.

Almost sounds like a soap opera. :P

Did the alien have Joey's baby? Will Lucinda recover from her coma in time to tell Elliot that he has AIDS and only has days to live? Will the fact chick realize she's fat? STAY TUNED!

  6. I'm not mocking you though. Just never got into Lost, so from an outsider, it looks pretty funny. :)

  8. I liked the show but had many of the same reservations. I thought Claire's about face on Charlie was a little forced but I think it was because of a few things:

Like Josh said, she may feel a little more like she can trust him thinking the heroin is gone.

She was scared by the sky going all funky and doesn't want to be alone.

Seeing him all battered and bruised scared her into realizing how much she cares about him.

Anywho, anyone want to lay odds Michael and Walt come back? Maybe they cross paths with Said and the Koreans as they motor away?

I liked that they explained the plane crash and now we may be free of the button! Hooray!

Also, good point earlier about a season finale with answers. Sure there are lots more questions but it's nice to get some things resolved and move on to new mysteries.

And finally, did anyone else notice that before they put the bags over Kate, Jack and Sawyer, the girl behidn Kate who lifts her copped a feel? It almost looked like a frame or two was missing ... first her hands were on Kate's lumps of fun, then they were near the armpits to lift her.

If anyone saved it, check it out for yourself.
