I recently realized that noone has ever said anything bad about TIVO, ever. It is like reverse cancer, as everybody WANTS to get it. But because I am a contrary asshole, I have to say TIVO sucks.
Now I realize this is akin to heresy and this postion is almost indefensible. But it's sheer awesomeness is also the source of it's suckiness. Because whoever has TIVO insists on telling you about it and how great it is, like an 18 year old girl talking about her boyfriend. Meanwhile, those who don't have TIVO (..cough...me...cough...) are left holding their dicks, thinking about how awesome it is. (Like an 18 year old guy). You're stuck on the outside of a High Definition Crystal Clear window looking in, while others watch two TV shows at one time with only one TV.
That's really the only argument I have as to why TIVO stinks. If everyone who owned it just shut up about it, it would be fine.
You should totally get it, Josh. It's awesome! No, really. It made my life much more complete. No more commercials, no more setting the VCR...I don't know how I survived without it.
ReplyDeleteMust concur with Ian that it is cream-in-the-pants fantastic. I own a Replay-TV which is the geek cousin of Tivo, but the same premise.
ReplyDeleteThe beauty is that you get to watch all kinds of new shows, and on your own terms. There's no more 'there's nothing on'. You're bound to miss certain shows, but now you can watch them on those days or nights when TV completely sucks. I actually have a backlog of shows to watch. You also watch and catch more shows that you'd usually watch. It saves alot of time too...you can watch and hour show in 45 minutes. There's also the pausing and replaying Live TV thing too.
The cost really isn't too bad. For ReplayTV, you can usually get a unit for $50 after rebate. Then it's like $13 a month. My cable 'magically appears', so that fits in my budget perfectly.
I have a Digital Video Recorder that my cable company loans out to me per month, it's like $8 a month and I never had to pay for the box. When I cancel cable, it goes with it and I get a new one with the next cable company.
ReplyDeleteMine doesn't record shows based on my preferences like TiVo but I never really wanted that anyway.
Just get it Josh ... it makes the world and your life better!
I don't have it either but it makes perfect sence- its basically for people who are too lazy to set their vcrs over and over- no tape- virtually unlimited space and you record shows by bringing up a guide and clicking a button.
ReplyDeleteJoshua- if you get it go with a company that doesn't charge a monthly fee for it- some are doing so for money of course because after all we are all pawns in the game of consumerism.
TIVO PWNS JOO ALL!
All of them charge a monthly fee. That's how they stay in bidness ;) If you want to avoid the monthly fee, you need to build your own box and buy 'SageTV'. It's a software suite that will allow you to turn a PC into a TIVO. In the long run, you'll save money, as long as you don't mind having a PC in your living room - and of course buying a PC that is good enough to run it along with a TV card as well.
ReplyDeleteYeah except all of em don't.
ReplyDeleteNo seriously fuck you they don't. There are two companies in St. Louis that don't charge a fee because hey, the other 5 or so are. It brings in da business. The problem for me is that dish network won't allow me to rent a fucking DVR-HD box, you have to purchase one for the low price of 599 and also install a second dish so fuck them in the goatass. Look at your options but I'm not sure what Chi Town has to offer.
