2006 - a weak year for movies?

At least that's the way it looked tonight, when I repeated my annual tradition of forgetting the Golden Globe awards were on, then flipping past the Golden Globe awards and going, "oh, shit, the Golden Globe awards are on." I mean, Dreamgirls? The Devil Wears Prada? Borat? Would these have even made the top ten most years? Can we just subtitle the 2007 Oscars, "Yes, We're Giving Scorsese 'Best Director'" and skip the telecast? Sober me with your conclusions.

  1. I think the thing that pissed me off most about Dreamgirls is the fact that it's been motherfucking heralded for MONTHS now, and now it's even getting awards......AND I'M NOT EVEN SURE IF ANYONE HAS SEEN IT YET!

    That's kinda weak.

Personally, I think any year that releases both BeerFEST and Beer LEAGUE can't be all that bad.

Also, I bought an 'international cut' pirated DVD of 'No Retreat, No Surrender' that Kevin is doing something with (hopefully making mass copies and shipping them to you all). Kevin and I sat in on the first screening - and I think this version might be even funnier! Much more homoeroticism!

  2. '06 had some great films: "The Last King of Scotland", "The Queen", "Half Nelson", "United 93" and "Little Miss Sunshine" to name a few.

While I think the Oscars will get it right and give Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren Oscars, the stars are aligning for Scorsese to get his award finally, albeit not deservingly in this case but his body of work is what people will vote for.

As most savvy people know, the Academy Awards are 15% talent based and 85% lobbying/politics.

I may not even watch this year's presentation because it just doesn't seem to matter anymore. The big Hollywood machine just runs rampant and the generally stupid public eats it up like a pathetic love story on a gigantic doomed cruise ship.

    BAH!!

  3. Babel? What is that?

It is Hollywood patting itself on the back for making a foreign language film with A-List celebrities.

And if I hear one more thing about Jennifer Hudson, I will be upset. I don't care that she is from Chicago. She is too young to remember the 85 Bears. So take that.

  4. I'm with you about the American Idol wannabe. Whether she wins is all based on hype and marketing which drives me almost nuts enough to post up my 2nd Annual Anonymous Awards.

Rinko Kikuchi should win Supporting for her role in "Babel" (which is mediocre aside from her storyline).

I do have to give props though to the Academy voters who were bright enough to nominate Ryan Gosling for "Half Nelson" and at least "Dreamgirls" isn't up for Best Picture ... but how in the hell did they get THREE nominations for Best Song?

I can only hope that the votes get split between them and the Randy Newman song wins just for shits and giggles.
