I just saw "300" and it's awesome. I even wrote up a review (it's on my site).
And I might as well add that I'm in preliminary discussions to resurrect The Sobering Conclusion and things are being fleshed out. Nothing definite yet but I'll let you all know as things become final.
Kdawg & I are going tonite using the passes I won in the Anonymous Awards competition.
ReplyDeleteFOR SPARTA!!!!!!!!!!
No Retreat! No Surrender!
ReplyDeleteTickets in Hand....really in wallet, but who cares?
ReplyDeleteI'll check it out before I read your review. Don't want any spoilers. (I wonder who wins?!?!?)
ReplyDeleteThe winner is you!
ReplyDeleteIt was good. Historically inaccurate but good.
ReplyDeleteFrank Miller doesn't care about history ... he cares about blood.
ReplyDeleteAll of this just made me want to see Kratos show up. Fortunately, I don't have to wait much longer - this Tuesday, The End Begins!!
ReplyDeleteGreat movie. "Joey, do you like gladiator movies?"
ReplyDeleteIt's an especially great movie if you like nipples, which I do.
I honestly expected them to start hawking ab-builders. This film made me want to do situps.
ReplyDeleteI actually thought it was 'ok' but not really good. Lots of violence does not a movie make. At least Gladiator and (partly) Troy had a story built in. Epic pieces with hours of violence and ten minutes of dialogue are imho a bit boring after a while. The best epic movie I ever saw was Kingdom of Heaven but by God get the directors cut, the theatrical version is missing more than 45 minutes and was essentially butchered by the studio.
ReplyDeleteBut yes Sparta was good just not a little over the top at places. Obviously parts of it were sensationalized given that the wolf looked like something out of the neverending story and most of the persian army looked like aliens.
The film was a realization of the graphic novel, not of the historical account (which differs greatly). So I liked how stylized everything was and took the bloodbath in for the visuals moreso than the script (which was far better than I thought it would be initially).
ReplyDeleteWhat I loved so much was how visceral the filmmakers were able to make the entire project.
It really felt like a graphic novel come to life and you never got the sense that the actors or the visual effects or any aspect of the production was winking at you, trying to cheat and trivialize their commitment.
I'd have to recant my review then- I didn't realize it was based off a novel. I typically don't watch movies based on novels until I've read the book first which in this case I hadn't so I can't judge how well the movie depicted the literature.
ReplyDeleteSo I'll have to read the book and get back to ya.
